Basic Hats
Shortly before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I found HanDIY’s awesome Star Wars beanie tutorials on Youtube. Since I had never made hats before, I was a little hesitant to invest so many hours into intricate R2D2 and BB-8 hats without knowing how to size them to fit me and my husband. So, in preparation of making those hats, I followed the tutorial videos without doing any of the color changes so that I could confirm the correct number of rows and increases to fit our heads. Using 5.5 mm (US size I) crochet hooks, I made a solid gray beanie following R2D2, and purple following BB-8. It turns out with the increase of the hook size from the suggested 4.25mm (due to not being able to find the correct size in Istanbul, and later learning the hook I bought was mislabeled), the suggested pattern fit my husband’s head, but I had to decrease my initial magic circle from 11 stitches to 10.
Each hat took less than a 100g ball of my Turkish brand 100% Acrylic yarn of choice, including my pom pom embellishment. For the pom pom, I followed Make It Handmade’s perfect pom pom tutorial. The hours spent on these hats were a worthwhile investment to know that the more intricate R2D2 and BB-8 hats would be perfect!
