Infinity Scarves
While my first crochet project was a blanket, it required a relatively large amount of yarn for something that I was not confident would turn out well. After making that blanket, I decided to switch to scarves, which I could complete much more quickly and with variations. Again, I turned to Melanie Ham’s blog for a simple infinity scarf pattern. This was a great project, as it was essentially entirely made from the hdc stitch. I continued to use my 10mm (US N) hook, and tried different types of yarn and starting chain numbers.
For help with this project, there are how-to videos for the following stitches: sl knot and ch, hdc, sl st
For my first variation, I used a leftover ball of yarn from my first blanket, James Brett Marble Chunky Yarn, in color MC52, and chained 115 to start. Seen above, this made for a nice sized scarf that could be doubled around my neck.
For my second variation, I used two 100g balls of Kartopu Special Polo Mix, in color D2096, and chained 182 to start. This scarf was extra long, and can be comfortably worn doubled or tripled around my neck.
The final variation was unfortunately made with unlabeled sale-bin yarn, but it was similar in weight to the other two. For something different, I made a cowl-style scarf, by only chaining 38 to start.
All three yarns were marble-style colors, but it is quite interesting to notice the difference in how this can appear after completed. The first scarf ended up with a horizontal stripe, the second with a vertical stripe, and the third with both colors evenly throughout. This will change depending on how many stitches you have in each row, and you may find that you want to pull stitches out and start over when using marble colored yarns, as it is hard to predict what the completed piece will look like with personal variations in stitch size and tension.
