Learning and Teaching – a simple hat
Shortly after finishing the Catan Blanket, I had a few of my friends express interest in learning to crochet, after seeing how many things I had made in just my first few months of learning. The idea of teaching something that was still so new to me was a little overwhelming, but I’m so glad I decided to try because it ended up being a ton of fun crocheting with them, and it helped me to improve as well.
We found an easy pattern for a simple double crochet hat, and began to crochet together. Again, due to what size hooks we could find, I was using a 6mm (US J) hook, so had to make a few adjustments to fit my head. I used some of the leftover yarn from the Catan Blanket, as a single hat doesn’t take an entire ball of yarn. I roughly followed the instructions for the Medium Adult hat, but below is exactly what I made. Note, I do not own and did not create this pattern, but slightly altered the pattern on Oombawka Designs.
Round 1: magic circle 10 dc; sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [10]
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [20]
Round 3: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [30]
Round 4: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [40]
Round 5: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [50]
Round 6: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts) 5 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [55]
Round 7: ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join [55]
Round 8-Round 13: repeat Round 8 [55]
Round 14: 1 sl st (loosely as this is a decorative edge) in each st around, finish off and weave in ends [55]
When finished, the hat looked a little plain, so at the suggestion of another friend who has done intricate crochet for years, I made three small flowers as attachments. I was very intimidated by them at the beginning, but they ended up being much simpler than I anticipated, and greatly added to the look of the hat.
For each:
Magic circle, 6sc, sl st to join
Petal 1: ch 3, 2 dc into circle, 1 sc into circle
Petal 2: ch 2, 2 dc into circle, 1 sc into circle
Petal 3: ch 2, 2 dc into circle, 1 sc into circle
Petal 4: ch 2, 2 dc into circle, 1 sc into circle
Petal 5: ch 2, 2 dc into circle, 1 sc into circle, sl st to finish
